Researchers are invited to apply for the opportunity to design a module of 30 questions addressing a topic of academic and/or policy relevance across Europe, for the Round 10 of the European Social Survey (ESS).
The questionnaire for each round of the European Social Survey (ESS) consists of two elements: a core module of substantive and socio-demographic items (around 100 in all); and two rotating modules that each include up to 30 questions. Repeat modules provide an opportunity to explore how attitudes and behaviour towards a given topic may have changed over time.
Topics covered by the rotating modules in previous rounds have included: immigration; democracy; economic morality; health and care; wellbeing; the timing of life, ageism and trust in justice.
Multi-national teams of researchers can now (prior to18th January 2018) submit applications to propose modules of questions to be fielded in Round 10 of the European Social Survey (ESS).
How to submit?
Applications must be made by teams of 3-5 scholars, located in at least three different countries who participate in the survey. At least one applicant must be from an ESS ERIC Member or Observer country.
Applications are invited for both ‘new’ rotating modules and for ‘repeats’ of prior modules. New modules may cover a new topic to the ESS or cover a topic or module that has previously been included on the ESS in a new way.
For comparative purposes, at least two-thirds of the questions included in a repeat module must be administered in an identical format to those in the earlier module.
Applications for repeat modules are invited from teams who designed the original ESS module on the topic or from entirely new teams.
If my module is selected?
Two modules for Round 10 will be selected by the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB). The SAB can select two new modules, two repeat modules or one new and one repeat module. This decision is entirely at the discretion of the SAB.
Each selected Question Module Design Team (QDT) will work closely with the ESS Core Scientific Team (CST) in developing its module.
Successful applicants are expected to produce analysis based on the module for the ESS Topline Findings series and are expected to publish at least one article accepted in a peer-reviewed journal based on the ESS data from their module.
Round 10 fieldwork will take place from September – December 2020, with the first available data published towards the end of October 2021.
Calendar
The deadline for Stage 1 applications is 18th January 2018. The application process will be completed by July 2018 with work on the rotating modules due to start in September 2018.
